How + Why to Fall Cleanse / An Ayurvedic Culinary Workshop

  • The Assemblage NoMad 114 E 25th Street New York City (map)

Ayurveda recommends a cleanse to accompany a change in season, to clear + open physiological and psychological channels that become congested as a result of improper diet, chronic stress, and exposure to chemical pollutants in environments within which we operate. The Fall is an especially important time to alleviate the body of stored heat which has accumulated throughout the summer, which contributes to systemic dryness, setting the stage for Fall coughs and colds that lead to weakened immune systems during the Winter months. The result of an Ayurvedic Cleanse is a restored and rejuvenated digestive and immune system, and purified mind to move gracefully into the colder months of the year with strength and clarity.

During this afternoon workshop, we will unfold the traditional Ayurvedic cleansing practice, called Panchakarma, discussing in depth what is digestion and why seasonal digestive support is important. You will learn not only why it is important to detoxify the internal organs and the sense organs, but how to do it yourself with a step-by-step practical guide as we discuss all the components of an Ayurvedic cleanse, detailing the daily routines, useful herbs and teas, as well as the mono-diet of kitchari - a blend of moong beans, basmati rice and digestive spices that is satisfying to the palate and detoxifying for your entire organism.

The class will culminate with a cooking class, demonstrating the techniques to making ghee (clarified butter), kitchari, and cilantro chutney so you are well equipped and experienced to host your own Ayurvedic cleanse at home. Kitchari will be served after the demonstration and recipes will be shared.
