Do you wake up in the morning feeling stressed, or find yourself feeling anxious throughout the day? Do you have trouble sleeping at night? Do your joints crack, are your muscles tight and inflexible? Is your skin feeling dry and lacking luster? Ayurveda's acupressure system of marma point therapy and practice of warm oil massage can help your body and mind cope and release the regular stressors and strains of daily life.
Marmas are vital points located on the surface of the body that connected to both gross and subtle channels and pathways in the body system. They are ‘vital’ because they are infused with energy, what in Ayurveda is called prana, or Life-Love-Evolutionary-Energy-Force which is imbued with consciousness; marma points are where consciousness is expressed.
Anatomically a marma is a juncture on the body where two or more types of tissue meet (i.e. veins, arteries, tendons, muscles, bones, joints); marmas connect nerve endings throughout the body. During this 2 hour class we will discuss the basics of marma theory and learn a number of useful marma points that you can activate on your own body to manage stress, calm your central and autonomic nervous systems. We will also learn the art of daily morning abhyanga, oil massage, in addition to an evening foot massage utilizing marma points to activate detoxification, relieve stress, ultimately bringing on deep relaxation.
In the original Ayurvedic text, Charaka Samhita, it is written: 'The body of one who uses oil massage regularly does not become affected much even if subjected to injury or strenuous work. By using oil massage daily, a person is endowed with pleasant touch, trimmed body parts and becomes strong, charming and least affected by old age.'
The Sanskrit word sneha has a shared meaning of ‘oil’ and ‘love’ as it is believed the effects of a good massage are akin to the feeling of being saturated with love!! Each participant will receive a bottle of herbalized massage oil made by Noël to practice these techniques at home. Handouts will be given, but please bring a pen and paper to take notes! Tea will be served.
