Ayurveda Master Class : Kapha Dosha

  • Maha Rose Center for Healing 97 Green Street Brooklyn, NY, 11222 United States (map)

This class is part of an Ayurveda Master Class series (see: Vata DoshaPitta Dosha, and Tridosha) intended for individuals who are familiar with the foundation principles of Ayurveda and are looking to move beyond the basic understanding of the Tridosha.

(*note, Tridosha is a separate class in December and not included with the price of the series)

According to Ayurvedic philosophy, all things in the world - the entire cosmos! - are composed of a collaborative network of the energies of the five elements Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Ether (Space). These elements are grouped into three functional principles that are likewise present in everybody and everything called the doshas - Vata, Pitta, and Kapha; they give rise to all rhythms and patterns in the natural world, and govern psychophysiological response and pathological changes in the human organism. When these three principles are working together in proper balance, they maintain a harmonious physiology, and thus healthy state of body and mind.

Body, mind, and consciousness must be in cooperation in order to maintain balance and thus health; learning how to bring these three facets of one’s being into balance requires an understanding of the unique energies of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, as well as how they work together.

The word Kapha comes from a combination of the Sanskrit words ‘ka’ meaning water, and ‘pha’ which implies flourishing. Kapha is a combination of the Earth and Water elements and is the force of anabolism in nature, governing all growth and development. It is the energy that forms the body’s structure and provides the cohesion that holds cells together. Kapha supplies moisture for all bodily parts, lubricating joints, hydrating skin and maintaining immunity, and is related to our sense of taste and smell. In a state of balance, Kapha expresses itself as strength, love, calmness, and forgiveness; out of balance, kapha leads to congestive disorders and ‘diseases of affluence’, as well as attachment, greed, and possessiveness.

In this two hour class, we will discuss:
*Functions of the Kapha Dosha
*Qualities (gunas) of the Kapha Dosha
*Sense organs associated with Kapha
*Primary seats of Kapha in human physiology
*Subdoshas of Kapha and their functions (Avalambak, Tarpak, Bodhak, Kledak, Shleshak)
*Symptoms of Kapha aggravation (physical + psychological) *Causes of Kapha aggravation
*General suggestions for treatment of Kapha vitiation and management

Handouts may be given and note taking is encouraged. A sample of Kapha pacifying tea blended by Noël will be shared at the end of class.
